My 7 Favorite Breakfast Eateries in the Greater Syracuse Area

Because breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I took creating this list very seriously. Breakfast/brunch is my favorite meal to go out for. Sometimes, I like to get a bit crazy and order breakfast for dinner – just to shake things up and keep people guessing. My choices below are a good blend of take out, counter service, and full service. Whether you want a leisurely breakfast or want to grab a bagel or pastry on the run, these options won’t disappoint. So here, they are, in no particular order, my 7 favorite places to have breakfast in the greater Syracuse area.

1) Rise N Shine: This is a great place for a fun, new take on breakfast. They are known for their specialty milkshakes and diverse pancake and waffle menu.  I highly recommend the Cinnamon Roll pancakes – just so yum. There are 2 locations (the diner on Thompson Rd and the restaurant on Wescott St) and the Wescott location serves alcohol (a fun brunch addition). Both locations are small, busy for breakfast every day of the week, and do not take reservations, so be prepared to wait. If you want to do something outside of the box, have breakfast for dinner at the Wescott location to avoid a long wait. The Thompson location is only open for breakfast/brunch.

*The Thompson location is temporarily closed.

2) Stella’s Diner: For a delicious breakfast and classic diner experience, look no further. This is my go-to breakfast place. The omelets are delicious, as are the breakfast sandwiches and frettas. Their home fries are crispy and just so good – but don’t forget to add peppers and onions. The menu is large and diverse but whatever you order, be sure to get a side of the Stella’s toast. It’s so worth the carbs. This is first come first serve and incredibly popular on weekends, so be prepared to wait. Although, it is a big restaurant and they do turn the tables over quickly. Don’t want to wait as long? Consider a seat at the counter and feel like a true diner patron. The have 2 locations but the original is on Wolf St.

*Both locations are currently open.

3) Water Street Bagel: I’m a sucker for a great bagel. If you are craving this breakfast carb of champions, look no further than Water Street where they cook their bagels in a wood fired oven. My personal favorite is the Rosemary Salt bagel, but you honestly can’t go wrong with any of them. Do yourself a favor and order a breakfast sandwich – they are unforgettable. There is so much goodness in every bite.

4) Sweet Praxis: This bakery in downtown Syracuse is a cute café with a small, simple breakfast ,menu. What they lack in quantity, they make up in quality. If you plan to come here, I’d skip all the baked goods and go straight for a specialty croissant (But also, come back later for the baked goods because they are also delicious). These warm, flaky breakfast delights are the best croissants I’ve ever had. A bold statement…I know but I stand by it.  My favorites are the Almond Croissant and the Frenchiest Toast Croissant. They have recently added quite a bit to their take out/catering menu to make it easy to experience the joy of Sweet Praxis at home.

*Currently, they are offering same day walk-up or curbside pickup but no inside seating. You are also able to pre-order cakes, pastry boxes, and specialty items online.

5) Nesticos Too: This small diner is known for it’s fast and friendly service as well as it’s delicious food. It has earned accolades such as “Best CNY Breakfast,” and let me tell you, it does not disappoint. Although everything is tasty, I am partial to the Frittata Nestico’s Style, and, because you need to end every meal with a sweet treat, I like to bring a friend so that we can split the Frittata and one of their specialty Belgian waffles. I prefer mine with pecans and bananas. Whatever it is you decide on, you’ll be back for more. It is a popular place with limited seating, so don’t be surprised if there is a wait.

6) Finally Ours: This diner has so much going for it. They serve breakfast and lunch in a simple but large diner setting. The menu is diverse and the food is delicious. My personal favorites are the Eggs with their homemade corned beef hash with onions and peppers and the stuffed French toast. My friend really enjoys the breakfast garbage plate – so much gravy goodness. What I loved most about this diner is how friendly and attentive the staff is. The food is always delivered quickly and the beverages are never empty. The only thing I don’t love about this diner, is the distance I have to drive to get there from the north side; however, it hasn’t stopped me yet, and I can confidently say it is worth every minute.

7) B’Ville Diner: This eatery has been a favorite amongst local diners for 86 years. It is located in the heart of Baldwinsville and is one of the only restaurants in the greater Syracuse area that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Their entire menu is available anytime day or night, making this the only place you can order a burger for breakfast, because…why not? Everything from the 50s décor to the delicious food makes this place a winning establishment. When you come here, order the Thick Raisin Bread French Toast. It’s delicious. It’s memorable. It’s what dreams are made of.
